Biography Keshav Prasad Maurya From Tea Seller in Kaushambi to UP Deputy CM: The Untold Political Journey of Keshav Prasad Maurya

Keshav Prasad Maurya is a self-made OBC leader whose journey from the bylanes of Sirathu in Kaushambi to the Deputy Chief Minister’s chair in Lucknow defines BJP’s social engineering in Uttar Pradesh. Born on 7 May 1969 in a poor Koiry-Maurya family, his father Shyamlal Maurya ran a small tea shop to feed the family. The thatched roof leaked during monsoons, and young Keshav sold newspapers in the morning to support his school fees. This poverty was not a setback but his biggest political school, teaching him the language of the marginalized.

His early association with Vishwa Hindu Parishad during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement shaped his ideology. While studying in Sirathu Inter College, he cycled from village to village mobilizing youths for Kar Seva, even going to jail in the early 1990s. The RSS network he built then became his lifelong organizational backbone. Unlike many leaders who jumped parties, Keshav never left BJP’s ideology – he remained a swayamsevak turned politician.

Maurya’s electoral graph is a classic case of rise, fall and survival. He lost Allahabad West in 2007 with just 19.8% votes, lost Phulpur Lok Sabha in 2009 with 24.11% votes, but won Sirathu Assembly in 2012 with 37.64% votes and a margin of 15,208. The massive Modi wave in 2014 gave him a historic win in Phulpur – a seat once held by Jawaharlal Nehru – with 52.44% votes and a margin of over 3 lakh votes, one of the highest in UP. This catapulted him to BJP’s UP President post in 2016, where he executed the booth expansion adding 1.5 crore members. In 2017, he won Sirathu again with 43.21% votes and became Deputy CM, handling PWD and building 1.2 lakh km of rural roads.

The 2022 defeat in Sirathu by 7,866 votes against Pallavi Patel of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) – SP alliance was a shock. With 43.8% votes against her 47.3%, the loss showed OBC votes splitting. However, BJP retained him via MLC route with 68.4% votes in Local Authority and kept him as Deputy CM, proving that his utility is more organizational than electoral. In 2024 Lok Sabha, his booth management gave BJP 44.2% vote share in seats he campaigned, above state average.

Controversies have followed him – the fake degree allegation of 2014 affidavit, the toll plaza audio leak of 2021, old criminal cases in affidavit including IPC 420 and 506, PWD scam allegation by Congress in 2019 citing CAG audit, his 2023 statement that OBC will decide next CM creating rift with Thakur lobby, and the family ticket lobbying for son Yogesh in Kaushambi in 2024. Each time he survived, calling cases political vendetta.

Today in 2025-26, Keshav handles Rural Development and Food Processing. He spends less time in Lucknow and more in Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Bundelkhand OBC belt organizing Maurya Maha Sammelan that drew 5 lakh people in 12 districts. Amit Shah trusts him as OBC anchor. For 2027 UP Assembly, three scenarios emerge: Best case, he re-wins Sirathu with 15k margin and becomes Home Minister; Neutral case, he becomes State President and launches son Yogesh from Sirathu; Worst case, if BJP shrinks to 150 seats and OBC shifts to SP, he gets sidelined as mere Kaushambi leader. His ambition next 5 years is to establish his son/brother in politics and get a bigger ministry or organizational role at state level. Despite setbacks, his hold as BJP’s Maurya face remains unchallenged because no other OBC leader in BJP combines Hindutva street cred, caste base, and booth-level network like he does.
